P7 Grandparents’ Day – A Special Final Visit
This year’s Grandparents’ Day was particularly meaningful for our P7 pupils, as it marks their final opportunity to welcome their grandparents into Killyhommon PS. The bond between our P7 children and their grandparents is truly something special.
As each grandparent entered the classroom, the smiles on the children’s faces said it all. The pupils were bursting with pride, just as their grandparents were proud of them.
We were delighted that so many grandparents shared a little insight into their own childhood memories. Some recalled their days in the very same P7 classroom, taught by Master Farrell. Amazingly, they could still point out the exact seat where they once sat all those years ago. Stories flowed about living in thatched houses, no running water, when they first had a TV in their house and their day trip to Bundoran.
One memory mentioned fondly was the hot school dinners, which many remembered as a real treat back in their day. While some grandparents looked back on their school years with great affection, others remembered more challenging times. The cane and the strap were spoken about with a mixture of humour and disbelief, and many could recall, very clearly, what they or their classmates did to receive such punishments! Listening to these stories offered the children a valuable glimpse into how much school life has changed over the generations.
It was a lovely opportunity for our P7 pupils to step into the past, compare experiences and appreciate how education has evolved. Most importantly, it allowed them to celebrate the people who support, guide and love them every day:their grandparents.
A heartfelt thank you to all who joined us and contributed to such a memorable morning. The stories shared, the laughter exchanged and the special moments between grandchildren and grandparents will stay with our P7 pupils long after they leave Killyhommon PS.
